Storytelling Workshop

The content of the “Tales of Heroes” Children Storytelling Workshop is focused on Hong Kong in World War II. After the fall of Hong Kong in December 1941, the people formed non-government organisations to continue to resist the Japanese underground and collected military intelligence, which contributed to the Allied counterattack. The most important organisations were the Hong Kong Kowloon Independent Brigade of the East River Column and the British Army Aid Group (BAAG). The workshops will introduce the stories of their members during the Japanese occupation to the participants.
The programme consists of two parts: HKMCD instructors will tell the stories of some major members of these organisations by means of comics, storyboards, and props in part one, and the participants are guided by HKMCD instructors to design and produce medal for the guerrillas in part two.

1. Light Clay Workshop: Factory Girl Wind-up Toy
In the 1960s, the industrial development in Hong Kong was flourishing. Different kinds of industries bloomed. Factory areas such as San Po Kong, Kwun Tong, Cheung Sha Wan, etc. were established successively. At that time, many light industries mainly employed women workers in product manufacturing. Thus, factory girls went to work and got off duties in groups became unique scenes. In this workshop, the instructor will introduce stories related to the industrial development of Hong Kong and teach participants how to make factory girl wind-up toy, so as to let them recognize and recall such interesting Hong Kong history.

2. Special Pinwheel Making
Pinwheel has auspicious meanings of “on a roll” and “sales go quick”. There are stalls selling pinwheels outside many temples in Hong Kong. Many believers would buy pinwheels after worshipping the gods as they believe pinwheels can bring good fortune. Pinwheel was also the favourite toy of children in the past. In the era of material scarcity, children liked to use simple materials nearby to make their own pinwheels. The instructor of this workshop will teach participants to make such gadgets of traditional culture.
